Everyone in the 20-something person company is treated the same, no matter what level they are hired at. Everyone in the company auditions every two weeks, no roles are precast (with the exception of two: the role of Gus in Cookin' with Gus and Kim Darby's role in Morning's At Seven). When not in rehearsal, everyone works backstage doing tech, no matter if they are intern, apprentice or professional actor. Everyone is treated the same, everyone gets their own cabin-style room, bathrooms are communal.

We put on five plays in ten weeks. We seek people who are easygoing yet serious about theatre...who can handle responsibility in a dedicated theatre environment, working as part of a team in any capacity.

There are three position categories at Pioneer Playhouse:

Actor - experienced actors only

Producer Charlotte Henson and Artistic Director Holly Henson audition actors for the resident acting company every April in New York City. Actors must arrive in Danville, Kentucky on June 1 and be available until August 23. Five plays will be mounted within a ten-week period. No roles are precast, members of the Company will audition for upcoming plays every two weeks. In the event of not being cast, actors will assist in other areas of production. The company is small and consists of people who are the right 'types' for roles, so the chances of being cast are usually very good.

Directors are all professional New York directors, as well as independent film director Robby Henson (The Badge, starring Billy Bob Thorton; Student Academy Award Winner - Best Documentary) and Artistic Director Holly Henson.

Company members will rehearse during the day and perform Tuesday - Saturday. Strike weekends are every other weekend - everyone works during strike weekends. Every other Sunday and Monday are off. The season starts May 28 and ends Aug. 16. (Shorter stays are negotiable).

Salary, room and board (three meals a day) will be provided. Each company member will have his/ her own rustic 'camp-style' room adjacent to the theatre. Bathrooms are communal. There is an air conditioned actors lounge with a kitchen and cable TV. Wireless internet is available. Laundry facilities are off property.

Apprentice - some experience required

Apprentices must either audition for us in person in New York City or Kentucky, or send in a videotaped audition. The pay is $75 per week, plus room and board.

We hire five apprentices. Most come from the New York or Kentucky auditions and have some professional theatre experience. We hire apprentices by April 10. An in-person or videotaped audition is mandatory. If sending a videotape, we must have it by April 9. Our audition dates are posted above.

Thanks for your interest, all the best to you in your career. If you wish to send a VHS video or DVD of your work, send two contrasting 2-minute monologues to:

Holly Henson, Artistic Director
Pioneer Playhouse
840 Stanford Rd.
Danville, KY 40422

Interns - for those seeking to experience being a part of a professional company, working alongside New York actors and directors in class and stage work. The internship program runs 8 to 10 weeks. The $900 cost includes room, board, tuition and 'hands on' experience in all phases of theatre production.

If you are unable to audition in person, intern acceptance does not require an in-person interview. One can send a photo and resume, followed by a telephone interview. The intern program does cost $900. If accepted to the intern program, you are guaranteed a spot in the company and do not have to go through the normal in-person audition process. There are seven internships available and we fill these as soon as the interview is conducted, approved, and we receive full or partial payment. You can 'plan ahead' with the Intern program --whereas with the apprenticeships we won't make final decisions until after our New York auditions, and they are very competitive.

Age range: 17 - 23.
